Welcome to our Governors’ section.

What do we do?

• The Governing Body, together with the Head Teacher, staff and Local Authority, is responsible for the school.
• We provide the strategic direction for the school and provide support and challenge to the Headteacher. We are there to give a long-term strategic direction to how the school is run; to be critical friends to the school. We hold the school to account for the standards it achieves and ensure that all the resources (including the school budget and staff) are properly used to meet the needs of all the children in our school and provide value for money.
• The Governing Body appoints the Headteacher and delegates to the Headteacher the responsibility of the day to day running of the school. Individual governors have no power as such, and we cannot speak or act on behalf of the Governing Board – any decisions are made by the Board as a whole.
• At Pinders Primary School we have 3 formal meetings of the full governing body every year, one each  term. The governing body often appoints sub-committees of governors to look at specific issues such as the school’s finance, staffing, curriculum and premises. 

•  Governors discuss and have input on:

  •  School policies, such as discipline, dress, sport, bullying and homework
  • Long term plans and the future of the school
  • How the school budget will be spent
  • How the school will try to reach performance targets
  • Appointment and dismissal of staff
  • Complaints from pupils, staff and parents
  • Repair and maintenance of school buildings
  • Use of school premises outside school hours

Who are we?

The Governing Body is made up of four groups who represent the 'stakeholders' of the school – the staff, the parents, the community and the Local Authority. We come from a wide range of backgrounds, who bring a wide range of skills, experience and perspectives to the governing body.

Types of Governor and how they are elected:

Co-opted Governor - appointed by the governing body and who, in the opinion of the governing body, has the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.  As a co-opted governor, they may have an area of specialist knowledge or experience or bring a wide range of skills and experience to the role of a governor.

Parent Governor – elected by the parents of registered pupils at the School.

Staff Governor – must be paid to work at the school and elected by the Staff.
